Online hospitality website Airbnb seems to have hit the sweet spot where bookings are concerned and is now having one of its best periods ever.
The company release some interesting data about its performance and one of the things that stood out was the sizable growth in business that it generated over the course of 2011. According to their released infographic, Airbnb booked more than 4 million nights in 2011, a figure which sees the company achieving more than 4 times the number of bookings in the previous four years combined. To date the company has booked over 5 million nights and according to a spokesman, that figure will be upped rather aggressively in the next couple of years.
Airbnb is based in San Francisco, but the bulk of its business (75%) is generated in Europe, with London, Paris and Berlin making up much of this percentage. For many this fact may be surprising, but the concept of the bread and breakfast (b&b) has always been a European thing. As one-night stopovers become the norm in North America and other locales, Airbnb should see even further growth in its business. For now I suppose the company will ride the wave of popularity it is seeing, especially now that it has an iPhone app to help drum up listings.
